Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 Laptop Frequently Asked Questions And Answers. 13-inch 2-in-1 with a stunning HDR display, 10th Gen Intel Core processors and up to 2.5 times more performance in a thinner frame, packaged in a luxurious design.
How long is the battery life? My biggest challenge is battery life with my xps 15. Im a dj and the battery drains so fast that i can do a gig without having to charge it .
Depends how you use it, if you watch intense Youtube or basically just leave the PC on without doing anything. The battery runtimes are different. However 2020 laptops you are able to charge it up with any QC3.0 PD external chargeable Battery via USB Type C charging just liked charging up your mobile phone.
Hi. The XPS 7390 comes with a 4-cell “smart” lithium-ion battery. Typically, a 4 cell battery should last upto 1.5-2 hrs under standard operating conditions. The operating time varies depending on operating conditions and can significantly reduce under certain power-intensive conditions.
The battery life is supposed to be around 17 hours out of the box.
I don’t know what’s wrong with the Dell representatives.
Yes, if you are playing the latest 3D games with screen on full brightness then you might have 2 hours of battery life.
However, the XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 is Project Athena certified. To get that it needs 16 hours of video playback battery life and 9 hours on typical multitasking(music streaming, WiFi on, multiple browser tabs) with 250 nits brightness(which is fairly high).
So I think you’ll be totally satisfied with it.
In black and white terms, according to Dell sales, the 1080p screen is rated 15-17 hours and the 4K screen is 10-12 hours.
These are estimates and even they say “will vary depending on use.” I think outside of the screen itself, each specific build will vary slightly in battery life. An i3 will have a much longer battery life than an i7.
Not to mention that these are not real world tests. Once the laptop is on the market and easily accessible, there will be many online, hands-on reviews and tests that I would believe much more over dell estimates. However, as David mentions, it is Project Athena Certified which means the battery estimate promises are supposed to hold up well in real world use. We will have to wait and see as this is the first Athena laptop.
What is the release date for the 7390?
The RTS date of Inspiron 7390 2-in-1 is 03/27/2019.
The original release date was July 10th 2019, but it looks to have been pushed back to sometime in August.
It was july 10 to begin with, than august 2nd and now they aren’t giving an exact date..just “next month or so” is all we get
What is the battery life of Dell XPS 13 7390 like? If I need to, am I able to toggle the resolution to get more battery life.
The operating time of the battery varies depending on operating conditions and can significantly reduce under certain power-intensive conditions.
Here are some general guidelines for “real life” battery life on the XPS 13 2-in-1 (7390). The configurations with the FHD+ panel can pretty much go all day with “typical” work. The MM14 benchmark is 16+ hours. For the configurations with UHD+ you would see about 60% of that same endurance. So, maybe a little more than half a day of typical work (or play). Both of the panels are excellent so if your preference is battery life, go with the standard FHD+ panel. If you need the extra resolution (and have the extra $) then get the UHD+ screen.
I just got my 7390 today i7/UHD 4k… Battery life is HORRENDOUS…. at 100% battery on Battery Saver mode (2% – that’s a single two – brightness and no apps open on fresh start from opening shipping box, i.e., no software installed), I am getting 4h 15m estimated time just letting it sit here doing nothing. If I start using any apps or push up the performance slider… battery drops to <2 to 3 hours tops. Why have a laptop?
Why doesn’t Dell offer a 7390 with i7, FHD+, 32GB, and 1TB? I am really confused. This is an almost $3k laptop. It’s going back.
I assume the Dell XPS 13 7390 is a modern Standby system. I would think the CNVio interface of the Intel 9560, or newer, would be better than the PCIe interface of the Killer Wireless 1650 in regard to low power activity? Reasoning for choosing Killer Wireless?
It’s killer bro. That’s why they went with it.
The Killer Wireless 1650 uses Intel AX200 WiFi chipset with Killer software installed. Not sure what this device uses but 1650 has a version with CNVIo. Probably uses CNVIo considering how compact it is.
It shouldn’t really make a difference in terms of power usage. CNVIo is for smaller form factors and reduction of BoM(Bill of Materials).
I think the answer is the processor being used is not CNVIo compatible. Since the Killer 1650 is PCIe, as is the Intel ax200, then they would both be OK but according to the service manual, it is not user replaceable. The Intel ax201 is a CNVIo device, so not compatible with the XPS 13 7390.
I suppose my thinking the CNVIo interface was being developed precisely for the modern standby system, to improve integration, was incorrect.
Thanks..
I notice you have to pay extra for services and such… If this laptop dies after a year or two, will dell replace Dell XPS 13 7390? Or would I have to buy the extended services at purchase.
We recommend getting an extended warranty and services like the Premium Support Plus to ensure that you continue to avail free services for any of your needs.
Even with the extended warranty they won’t replace it. I’ve had mine about a year and it has been shipped out for repairs four times and about ready for a fifth. Even with all the problems with this machine they have refused to replace it. Over $1200 for a big, non-working piece of junk.
I’m thinking about canceling my Spectre x360 13″ for this model Dell XPS 13 7390 but I’m reading a ton of complaints about battery life on the FHD around 4-5 hours max with normal use and the screen at 150 nits. Also, what about coil whine? A lot of complaints as well.
Hi. We have not had any reports of poor battery or coil whine on the XPS 7390. If you do experience issues we have a dedicated 24/7 technical support team that can look into it and assist you accordingly. You could reach out to them when available by sending a direct message at https://dell.to/2XnMBVw or private message at https://dell.to/2XfeYF3 with the system Service Tag.

The Inspiron 13 7390 2-in-1 has up to 11 hours 6 minutes (666 mins) of Mobile Mark 14 battery life when equipped with Intel® CoreTM i7-8565U Processor, Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics with shared memory, 16GB LPDDR3 system memory, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, UHD touch display, 4-cell 52 WHr* battery and Windows 10, as tested by Dell labs in March 2019.**
*The stated Watt Hour (WHr) is not an indication of battery life.
**Battery life is based on Mobile Mark 2014 benchmark test, available at https://dell.to/2uWAGUO. Test results are for comparative purposes only. Actual battery life may be significantly less than the test results and varies depending on product configuration and use, software usage, operating conditions, power management settings and other factors. Maximum battery life will decrease with time.
***Within Dell Power Manager software, selecting either the Default mode of Adaptive Charge or ExpressChargeTM can recharge system battery from 0% up to 35% within 20 minutes when system is powered-off and battery temperature is between 16-45 degrees C. With ExpressChargeTM mode enabled , the system battery can then continue charging up to 80% within 60 minutes. After charging has reached 80% capacity, charging speed will return to normal speed. Recommended for use with the provided Dell power adapter; not recommended with a smaller capacity power adapter. Charging time may vary +/-10% due to system tolerance.
We are committed to customer satisfaction and always offer free shipping and easy returns as well so you can shop with confidence.
I get much better than that with my FHD – typically 8h; 6h for constant video. Charges fast too. No coil whine on mine.
2 causes for complaints (1) buggy windows (check task manager for useless tasks) and (2) buggy BIOS (laptop wakes up when plugged in or unplugged). Hoping #2 will be patched soon.
Excluding the bezels, what are the dimensions of the JUST the screens on both the Dell XPS 13 9300 and Dell XPS new 2-in-1? Not diagonally, but horizontally and vertically. I need to compare the two in order to make a decision on which to purchase. Thanks
Hi. Please find the specifications link for the display for both models below :

For the new XPS 13 7390 2-in-1, is it possible to update the SSD at a later point?
The XPS 7390 2-in-1 is tested to work with a maximum SSD storage capacity of Up to 1 TB on PCIe Gen3.0x4 NVMe, up to 32 Gbps interface.
No, the SSD is soldered onto the motherboard and can’t be replaced.
Why is there no option to get a 1TB SSD with 16GB RAM for the XPS 13 7390 2 -in-1?
The current configurations of Inspiron 13 7390 2-in-1 are available with 16GB memory, 512 GB PCIe NVMe x4 Solid-State Drive (Onboard) Storage under Order Code x27390dnkys. Also, there is another one with 32 GB memory (integrated), 1 TB PCIe NVMe x4 Solid-State Drive (Onboard) Storage.
You can select one accordingly or upgrade it later.
The XPS 13 2 in 1 you cannot upgrade any components later. They are all soldered onto the motherboard. This is why not having a 1TB option (except on the top configured unit with 32GB ram) is an issue.
We need the option to have 1TB on lower configs as well.
I thought that they where adding new color options such as rose gold. I swore I saw it on their site yesterday that it was coming in Fall but now I don’t see that as being a option. Did this change or was I looking at the wrong model?
Hi. We don’t have that color available and will not be available any time soon.
You were most likely looking at New XPS 13 laptop. it has that option on their website.

What are the pen stylus compatible with the xps 7390, not from the dell family, will surface pro / adonit ink work with it? what about wacom pens?
New XPS 13 2-in-1 7390 is not designed or tested with any specific non-Dell brand stylus / pen. However, If the system requirements of the pen meet with the current system configuration, then it should work well.
NOTE: This model supports the Premium Active Pen (PN579X) only on certain configurations that are shipped with a ‘Pen enabled sticker on it’.
It is compatible with the Wacom pens.
what is the voltage of the charger 110 or 220 of Dell XPS 13 7390 ?
The New XPS 13 inch 2-in-1 7390 system is designed to support a USB Type-C 45 W power adapter with an input voltage range from 100 VAC x 240 VAC.
The power adapters that come with your system vary depending on the region and country that you live in and where you purchase your system. If you buy it in your home (ship to) country and your sockets are 110v then you get that adapter. If your country’s sockets are 220v then you get that adapter.
Would you recommend using an external GPU connected via Thunderbolt 3 in Dell XPS 13 7390?
Dell has not designed and tested the New XPS 13 2-in-1 7390 with any specific external GPU. However, if the external GPU meets with the system requirements then it should work well.
I have the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390 with an external GPU connected (NVIDIA Titan V in Razor Core X case) and it works great for me.
I want windows pro in Dell XPS 13 7390. How do I select it?
Yes, the XPS 7390 2-in-1 is available in both Windows 10 Home 64bit English and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit English operating system. You can select one accordingly from the list of available configurations.
The available configuration options from the Dell website seem to change almost daily. Sometimes the option to customize OS version is there, other times it’s not. Regardless you can upgrade to Win10 Pro from Microsoft once you have the device in your possession.
What is battery life difference between 1920 x 1200 and 3840 x 2400 screens?
Will it be possible to order max spec (1TB SSD and 32Gb RAM) with 1920 x 1200 screen?
Currently, not even the sales team has a perfect answer for this. In black and white terms, according to them, the HD screen is rated 15-17 hours and the 4K screen is 10-12 hours.
These are estimates and even the sales team says “will vary depending on use.” I think outside of the screen itself, each specific build will vary slightly in battery life. An i3 will have a much longer battery life than an i7.
Not to mention that these are not real world tests. Once the laptop is on the market and easily accessible, there will be many online, hands-on reviews and tests that I would believe much more over dell estimates.
To your second question, no it will not be possible. Dell’s preset builds do not allow this
On every website including Intel’s own, the i7-1065G7 comes with 8mb of L3 Cache. But on Dells website it claims it only has 6mb. is this a typo? Or are we not getting the full chip. Thanks.
The Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 Processor comes with 8 MB L3 cache only.
You may want to update this on your website. Some people care what they are getting.
Does the XPS13 7390 support 2 memory channels, and does the 4GB option use both memory channels ?
Memory on the Inspiron 7390 2in1 is Onboard memory. The configurations supported are :
• 8 GB onboard memory
• 16 GB onboard memory
NOTE: The memory is integrated on the system board from the factory and it cannot be upgraded later.
LPDDR4X is different than what you know normally. Each die has two independent 16-bit channels, so that’s 32-bit. In order to be equal to dual-channel memory like in Desktops, you need four dies. The smallest LPDDR4X is available in 8Gb(1GB) capacities so its definitely possible to get 128-bit out of it. It’s also possible to get two dies per package to get 4x 16-bit connections saving you space by only using two packages.
In the upgradeable laptop SO-DIMM and laptop DIMM packages, each die is 8 or 16-bit, but you have many of them to reach the 64-bit required per DIMM. So dual channel in the “PC” sense means 128-bit width.
Does any of the ports accept a USB device in Dell XPS 13 7390?
the 2 thunderbolt ports are usb 3.0 ports as well, you just need a simple adapter
Hi. The Inspiron 7390 comes with an USB 3.1 port located on the right side of the laptop. You can more information from this link https://dell.to/2OTbhFe.
If I buy the 16GB of RAM model will I be able to upgrade to 32GB later if I buy it separately in Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1?
No the description states onboard for RAM and SSD. That means its soldered, so get the configuration that you want.
No. I was informed by Sales the memory is on-board meaning its soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded. In fact, most everything including the SSD cannot be upgraded post-sale.
Will my Linux Mint run on Dell XPS 13 7390, like it is running on my xps 15 right now? Or will there be compatibility issues?
I recommend doing a search online for that information.
At the very least you’ll need a more modern kernel than the default 4.15 version in the most recent Linux Mint (19.2 as of this writing) to support some of the advanced hardware, like the new processor and Thunderbolt 3. So, Linux Mint won’t work by default, and you should look to the latest kernel info to see when Thunderbolt 3 will actually be usable in Linux, as well as what support exists or will exist for the Ice Lake processors.
An update to my earlier response: The Ice Lake Iris Plus graphics has been supported since kernel 5.2, and now Thunderbolt 3 will be supported in the upcoming kernel 5.4. While Linux Mint 19.2 ships with the long-term-support kernel 4.15, it might work with the new kernels. If not, you can get a different flavor of Linux and still use Cinnamon or another desktop environment to configure it to be like Linux Mint.

Will this computer Dell XPS 13 7390 2-in-1 come with an option for 2tb ssd
No, multiple pre-shipped hands-on reviews say the new and improved version will only support up to a 1TB ssd.
No, and the ssd is soldered to the motherboard so you can’t replace it either.

What is the difference between xps and inspiron?
Hi. The main difference between the XPS and the Inspiron is their target. The Inspiron is an entry-level line-up while the XPS, which stands for Xtreme Performance System, is a line of high-performance machines for heavy computing. Xps is a premium, lightweight whereas Inspiron is cost-effective and does not have as good build quality as XPS. Both are consumer-grade systems with XPS being overall being better in terms of build quality, design, features, and functionality.
I have an XPS that is just over a year old. So far the hard drive went bad (down for three weeks for repairs), crashed and would not start (down for three weeks for repairs) and now the power button is locking. Why should I consider new XPS?
